Identifying a layer of flooring material
I was considering re-doing a vinyl floor that had a gap (as shown in pictures) left due to renovating cupboards nearby. There’s a black material underneath the vinyl itself that I’m not sure what it is, I didn’t see anything similar in stores or in how-to guides. I’m trying to figure out what will be involved in either removing or preserving and using it.

It’s kind of stiff but bendable. House is in MN, ~100yo but with a wave of poorly-done renovations before the last sale ~20 years ago that this might have come from.
Anyone able to identify it from the pics? The sub have any general advice on investigating this kind of mystery?
e: It’s ~1/16″ thick.
