$2.6 million bridge will make crossing Superior Avenue safer in Newport Beach
The city of Newport Beach will build a bridge to help pedestrians and bicyclists cross Superior Avenue at West Coast Highway.
But plans for a dog park accompanying the project were recently nixed by the City Council after complaints from nearby residents.
Being so close to the coast, officials said, the area gets a lot of foot and bike traffic and the bridge will be a safer option for them. It also will improve access to Sunset Ridge Park, which was developed a few years ago. The 13.7-acre park has a baseball field, soccer fields and a playground for kids, but it doesn’t have a parking lot – including one that was prevented by California Coastal Commission permitting constraints, officials said. Instead, visitors park in a small lot near Sunset View Park and cross the street to the other park.
Now they’ll be able to use the bridge. The parking lot also will be increased.
The bridge will cost about $2.6 million to build.
