What’s new this year at the Downtown Farmers’ Market

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Downtown Farmers’ Market officially starts on Saturday and there will be some changes this year to make room for the growth of what was rated one of the best farmers markets in America.

People can still expect to see hundreds of vendors lined up along the streets of the Court District ready to sell local goods. And this year, they’re adding another street.

In previous years, the market stretched from Water Street to Fifth Avenue on the Court District as well as north and south on Second Avenue, Third Street and Fourth Street. This year, they’re adding a section on Water Street, between Walnut Street and Court Avenue. A map of the Downtown Farmers Market can be found here.

This new street will add 12 more booths, which will make space for the 53 new vendors this year.

Water Street is also the home to the Hub Spot, a building that will be used for special activities. Once a month during the market, they will host activities like yoga or bouquet-making inside the Hub Spot.

The Greater Des Moines Partnership said that the best place to park is in the public parking garage on 3rst Street and Court Avenue.

However, there is also free transportation to the market on Dart’s D-Line. From May through October, the D-Line starts Saturday service at 8 AM for the market. A map of the D-Line Route can be found here.

There is also a new manager for the market this year. Elizabeth Weyers is entering her sixth season of the market, but first as a manager.

“I really, really love the market and it’s exciting to see it through this lens. I’ve seen it through a lot of different lenses and different roles throughout the years and so it’s exciting to jump in and kind of be the lead on sight and so it’s really exciting,” she said.

The Downtown Farmers’ Market starts Saturday, May 4th at 7:00 a.m. and runs to noon. The first 300 people who come to 3rd Street and Court Avenue will be given bells to ring when the market starts.
