Chief Dana Wingert retiring from Des Moines Police Department

DES MOINES, Iowa — The head of the Des Moines Police Department plans to retire.

Chief Dana Wingert has served in the role since 2015. Wingert was hired as a DMPD officer in 1991 and has held multiple positions in the department.

Before taking the chief job, Wingert commanded the Operations Division, overseeing police patrol, neighborhood-based service delivery, Metro Star, traffic and parking unit, K-9, airport security, and school resource officers.

In a statement from Des Moines City Manager Scott Sanders, issued Thursday, he thanked Chief Wingert for his dedication to the city.

“We will be sad to see Chief Wingert retire, but will take advantage of the next few months to celebrate his nearly decade long leadership. Chief Wingert has been a voice for pushing the Des Moines Police Department forward. He has helped shepherd the City through difficult times, while remaining a positive pillar of our community. The City of Des Moines cannot thank Chief Wingert enough for his dedication to service and public safety. He will be greatly missed.”
