Downtown Hy-Vee, city reach agreement for store hours
DES MOINES, Iowa — The downtown Hy-Vee and the city of Des Moines have reached an agreement on when the grocery store will be open.
In February Hy-Vee announced it would be scaling back their hours of operation. The grocery store chain said in a statement at the time that the reason for the change in hours was due to loitering, theft, and a lack of foot traffic among other things.
The city said Hy-Vee’s sudden change in hours violated their agreement, and for several months the two entities have been negotiating a possible solution.
That solution could be approved on May 6 by the Des Moines City Council.
According to city council documents, Hy-Vee and the city have agreed to a temporary two year change in operation hours. During Daylight-Saving Time the store must be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. During non-Daylight-Saving Time the store must be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
At the end of two years, the store will move to 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily except on state and national holidays.
Hy-Vee issued a statement about the downtown store.
“The City of Des Moines and Hy-Vee have come to an agreement over the minimum hours of operation that the Fourth & Court Hy-Vee will operate. We believe this amendment best addresses the concerns of those who live and work in the area.
