Chilly weather in store for Southern California this weekend, storm expected Monday
Bundle up and keep warm. While it will be dry this weekend, it will remain chilly.
The respite will be short, however, since another storm is expected to hit Southern California on Monday, with a low pressure system bringing back rain, snow and wind. Authorities warned drivers planning to travel through mountain roads to be prepared.
Travel will be treacherous Monday morning to Monday night on mountain passes, according to Tom Fisher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard which covers Los Angeles County.
The previous storm, which struck Christmas evening, brought heavy rain and snowfall and also led to the closure of the 15 Freeway through the Cajon Pass and the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine area as well as some mountain resorts on Thursday.
“We may have a repeat of it. Plan ahead,” Fisher said.
On Friday, the mountain resorts were open, the sun was out but it remained cold in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties. High temperatures only reached the upper 50s and low 60s. It dipped into the 40s in many communities.
In downtown Los Angeles, the highest temperature was 66 degrees and the lowest was 44 degrees. Santa Ana saw a high of 62 and a low of 44, Chatsworth reached a high temperature of 59 degrees and a low of 45 degrees, the mercury hit 61 and dipped to 40 in Pasadena while San Pedro posted a high temperature of 62 degrees and a low of 38 degrees.
Riverside reached a high of 60 degrees and a low of 41 degrees while San Bernardino only saw a high of 59 degrees and a low of 40 degrees.
“We will have a little break from the storm (on the weekend),” according to Adam Roser, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego which covers the counties of Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside.
Downtown Los Angeles should see a high of 61 degrees on Saturday and 62 degrees on Sunday while the valleys are expected to hit the upper 50s on Saturday and the low 60s on Sunday, Fisher said.
There will be just a few degrees difference between communities in Los Angeles County, Fisher added.
He said the mercury should dip to the 40s on both days.
Temperatures in Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties for the weekend should hover in the upper 50s and low 60s, Roser said, adding it will be slightly warmer on Sunday.
It will be sunny Sunday morning but cloudy by afternoon, according to Fisher.
Southern California is expected to see rain Monday morning. The mountain areas will see snow Monday morning, he added.
He said it will be below freezing Monday and Tuesday in the Grapevine area. It will be dangerous travel, he added.
The storm will also bring winds.
“We’re looking for strong and gusty winds Monday,” Fisher said. He estimated the winds at 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 mph.
The mountain areas might see gusts of 30 to 35 mph while the Inland Empire and coastal areas in Orange County could get 20 to 25 mph winds, Roser said.
