Repairing rotted exterior door frame
I noticed about a month ago that my door frame had started to rot down at the bottom of the hinge side of the frame, where the frame meets the aluminum threshold. Since then, as the weather’s changed, I now have to pull up fairly hard on the door when turning the knob in order to get it to open as the latch hangs, so to speak, on the strike plate when the door is shut. I also have to lift the door by the handle I order to get it to latch properly. I watched a few YouTube videos for ideas on how to address this issue. It seems to be the following would be the best course of action:
- Chisel out the rotted wood
- Shim the door so that it’s approximately level with the strike plate
- Apply wood gardener to affected area
- Fill the affected area with wood filler and shape/reapply as necessary
Is there anything I’m forgetting? Or should I take another route tackling this repair? Thanks very much in advance for any feedback.
