Winter Farmers’ Market kicks off its final day

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Greater Des Moines Partnership is hosting the final day of the Winter Farmers’ Market on Sunday at Hall B in Hy-Vee Hall.

Over 100 vendors are showcasing their local products. Doors opened at 9 a.m. and people can stop by and shop until 4 p.m. Attendance is free.

One of the vendors is Breann’s Bread Box. Breann Hooper is based out of Indianola and bakes sourdough bread as well as sweet treats like cookies and brownies.

This is her first time at the Winter Farmers’ Market and she is excited to showcase her small business to the community.

Another new vendor is Black Bagel. Devin Lam and Lloyd Yates are co-owners of the business and bake home-made bagels. The couple is relatively new to Iowa. They moved to Des Moines from Miami recently and the market is helping them share their delicious bagels with the metro.

Devin and Lloyd are both bagel-lovers, but Lloyd grew up baking bagels with his family. Their recipe was passed down from his grandmother, and he said their secret ingredient is maple syrup.

People are also getting into the holiday spirit at the Winter Farmers’ Market, and vendors like Quilted Gardens Nursery are helping make that happen. They are a Christmas tree farm just south of Indianola, but one of their best-sellers at the market are Christmas bells.

Barry Laws with Quilted Gardens Nursery is also hosting a program for anyone to take part in where they can decorate their own holiday porch pot. Participants are given a porch pot and are provided with a fresh bundle of greens which are grown on their Christmas tree farm and supplies to decorate it, like pinecones, stars, bows, etc. The program starts at 1 p.m. and lasts an hour.
