6 injured in Fort Dodge apartment fire
FORT DODGE, Iowa — The Fort Dodge Fire Rescue responded to an apartment fire that injured six on Sunday morning.
Around 2:21 a.m. the Fort Dodge Fire Rescue was dispatched to 1107 Central Avenue for trapped occupants on the third floor of an apartment building.
Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the windows and a female occupant trapped at a third-floor window. Fire crews first attempted to use ground ladders to rescue the occupant. Eventually they were able to use two separate ladders to reach the woman. Several other residents were able to exit the building on their own.
Crews used two hose lines to attack the fire and were able to maintain the fire to the original building. Crews conducted searches of the eight apartments and hallways; no other occupants were found. The fire spread to the attic and roof requiring extensive extinguishment.
Four occupants were treated on scene and transferred to the Unity Point Fort Dodge Emergency Department. One of these occupants also suffered burns and was life-flighted to the University of Iowa Hospital with serious injuries. Two other residents self-transported to the Unity Point Fort Dodge Emergency Department for smoke inhalation.
The apartments on the third floor sustained heavy fire damage while the first and second floor sustained smoke and water damage. 12 residents of the apartment are displaced.
The building next to the fire, 1109 Central Avenue, had significant smoke enter through the building. Seven residents from the second and third floor were evacuated from the building.
A 3rd alarm and mutual aid was requested from Webster City Fire Department for additional resources on the scene. The Fort Dodge Fire Rescue was assisted by Mid – American Energy and the Fort Dodge Police.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
