Drought relief at last: thunderstorms will be moving through Iowa Thursday night

Des Moines, IOWA — A strong storm system will move into Iowa Thursday night. A warm front is out ahead of the low pressure with a cold front sweeping through behind it. This will lead to some strong-to-severe storms. There is a marginal risk in effect for areas south of highway 30 and mainly east of I-35 tonight.

The biggest threat will be gusty winds and hail from a few of the stronger storms. The strongest storms will hit after 6 PM and before Midnight.

The rainfall totals will be the heaviest in eastern Iowa with some one-inch plus amounts by Friday morning. Friday afternoon will be dry and cooler.

More rain is needed across Iowa. The latest drought conditions are getting worse.

Thursday Drought Conditions

The driest conditions in the state are in northern and western Iowa. Their next best chance for rain is on Wednesday.
