Johnston-Grimes firefighters training in burning home Friday
JOHNSTON, Iowa — If you see smoke in Johnston today, don’t be too alarmed.
The Johnston-Grimes Fire Department is using the home at 5640 Northwest Beaver Drive for training during a controlled burn. The training began at 9:00 a.m. Friday.
“So today what we’re focusing on is we’re doing interior fire tac evolutions. So our crews are actually going to be stretching hose lines in and are faced with the fire inside the structure and we’re gonna put that out. At the same time we’re working on searching for victims so we do have some training mannequins in place so while there is real world environment occurring they’ll also be working on search,” said Battalion Chief Tristan Johnson, Johnston-Grimes Fire Department.
Different crews are being rotated in throughout the day to make sure they get a chance to train. Once training is complete, the home will be burned to the ground.
Officials expect to have things wrapped up by 4:00 p.m.
The home was donated to the department.
