Untreated wastewater found in Des Moines River after contractor hits main in Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE, Iowa — Untreated wastewater was found in the Des Moines River after a contractor hit a force main in Fort Dodge on Wednesday.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the City of Fort Dodge notified them of a contractor hitting a force main at the Kenyon Road Bridge, causing wastewater discharge to enter the Des Moines River. The main goes under the river and transports untreated wastewater to the wastewater treatment plant.

The DNR said about 400,000 gallons of wastewater entered the river. No dead fish have been found. Repairs have been completed and cleanup is underway.

With Labor Day weekend just around the corner many people are looking to get out onto the water, but the DNR is warning recreational users downstream of the discharge to stay out of the river at this time.

The investigation into the discharge is ongoing.
