Teen driver was evading traffic stop before fatal early morning crash, Iowa State Patrol reports

DES MOINES, IOWA — A passenger was killed in a crash in downtown Des Moines early Wednesday morning after a teen driver was traveling the wrong way on Grand Avenue while trying to evade a traffic stop, the Iowa State Patrol is now reporting.

The crash happened around 1:00 a.m. near the intersection of Grand Avenue and 7th Street in downtown Des Moines. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a trooper tried to stop a speeding Hyundai on I-235 but the driver refused to stop, exiting the highway at 31st Street then traveling southbound and then east on Grand Avenue. The trooper reportedly slowed down as the vehicle sped away. Minutes later the trooper found the vehicle at the intersection involved in a crash with another vehicle.

Troopers say the Hyundai was traveling the wrong-way on Grand Avenue at 7th Street when it hit a Jeep Cherokee — sending one of the vehicles careening into the Ruan Center on the south side of the road.

The Iowa State Patrol reports a passenger in the Hyundai died from injuries suffered in the crash. The driver — a 16-year-old with outstanding warrants on a weapons charge — and three other passengers were injured. Two occupants of the Jeep Cherokee suffered minor injuries.

Police have not released the names of any of the individuals involved in the crash.
