Des Moines man sentenced to 55 years in prison for sexual abuse

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man accused of sexual abuse in Polk and Story County was sentenced on Friday.

Matthew Akeem Butts, 36, entered an Alford plea of guilty to third-degree sexual abuse and extortion on Friday. Butts was sentenced to 10 years in prison by District Judge David Nelmark. Story County sentenced Butts to 45 years in prison on August 12 for two counts of third-degree sexual abuse and distributing drugs to a minor.

Butts will serve a mandatory-minimum sentence of 5 years in prison. This will run consecutive to the Story County sentence. Polk and Story County worked together to construct the plea deal.

Butts met both of his victims online through Snapchat. One of the victims and her mother spoke on the effects of the crime.

“We all warn our children about bad people, and in today’s day and age, we warn our kids about the dangers of social media, but we never really believe that our kids are going to be victims of online predators,” the victim’s mother told the court.

Butts will be placed on the sex offender registry and serve a special sentence of probation for the rest of his life.
