House Ways and Means hearing at Iowa State Fair
DES MOINES, Iowa — The US House Ways and Means Committee came to the Iowa State Fair Friday to discuss the sunset of the Trump era tax cuts in 2017.
“The lesson we should take from the Trump tax cuts is that when we put working families first, help small businesses succeed, and give Americans the tools to out-compete China, America will win,” said Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith. “Democrats in Washington including Vice President Harris, they don’t see it that way, they look at working families and they see as an ATM to find their big government spending.”
A series of witnesses were on hand to talk about the positive impacts of the Trump tax cuts.
“Thanks to lowering the corporate tax rate to 21% Sukup grew their workforce by a third adding 200 well pay manufacturing jobs in our community,” said Sukup CEO Steve Sukup.
“If these tax provisions change, it will be catastrophic for us and many others,” said Jolene Riessen, President of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
“With three boys and two working, parents and families benefited immediately from any of the policies included in the TCCA,” said Sarah Curry, of the Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation. “At the top of the list is the expansion of the child tax credit for my sons, keeping more of our earnings help us with the needs that all parents have for babies and toddlers.”
4th District Congressman Randy Feenstra hosted the event talking about the tax deductions and child tax credits going away.
“If all these things go away, it will have a dramatic effect for families, for small businesses, for main streets,” said Feenstra.
No Democratic congress members joined the Iowa hearing, but a local democratic leader did attend.
“I think the bulk of people like that like family, farmers, and hard-working Iowans are not the ones seeing the benefit from this,” said Matt Sinovic, of Progress Iowa. “I imagine there will be, that there are some that do see the benefits, and those are, like I said, extremely wealthy and that’s what every bit of research shows.”
After the hearing panel members took a walk through the Iowa State Fair.
