How parking for the Iowa State Fair can support Veterans
DES MOINES, Iowa — Since 1974 the VFW Post #738 located next to the fairgrounds has raised money by offering parking during the Iowa State Fair.
Kevin Wolfe, the Commander of the VFW Post #738, said this year the VFW has moved to a pay what you can donation model, which has been very successful.
“This year has been really great, we’ve gone to donation-only and people are just when they can only give $5 they give $20.” Wolfe said.
Stuart Juarez, the Post’s Quartermaster, said the parking fundraiser during the fair is responsible for raising the majority of the VFW’s Charity dollars.
“It produces about 80-85% of our income for those things.” Juarez said.
The VFW donates the money it raises to a variety of causes, from helping homeless veterans to school scholarships.
