Des Moines police officers involved in deadly shooting identified

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Des Moines Police Department has released the names of two of its officers who were involved in a shooting that resulted in the death of a suspect and serious injuries to an officer.

Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department said Senior Police Officer Jesse Schneider and Police Officer Anthony Lampman responded to the 5800 block of SE 35th Circle on July 30th on a report of someone violating a restraining order shortly after 3:30 a.m.

They spotted the suspect’s vehicle in the area and there was a short chase. The vehicle went off the road in the 4300 block of E. Army Post Road and the suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Weston Derby of Bellevue, Nebraska, left the vehicle and ran into the thick vegetation. Sgt. Parizek said Derby turned toward officers and produced a gun, first pointing it at his own head, and then pointing it at officers. That’s when both officers fired at Derby and he was hit with gunfire. Derby died at the scene.

SPO Schneider was injured in the shooting and police initially thought he had been shot by Derby. It was later determined he had been hit by a bullet from Officer Lampman’s weapon.

Sgt. Parizek said SPO Schneider was in critical condition at one point, but his condition has continued to improve and on Tuesday, he was discharged from the hospital to continue his recovery at home.

Both officers remain on paid administrative assignment as is policy following an on-duty critical incident.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being conducted by the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation.
