Iowa farmers, other self-employed, can apply for FEMA assistance

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCAU) — Iowa farmers and other self-employed workers qualify for FEMA Disaster Assistance.

According to FEMA, their assistance program can aid self-employed workers such as farmers, ranch hands, artists, musicians, mechanics, and more.

This assistance is available to self-employed survivors in the following Iowa counties: Adair, Adams, Buena Vista, Cedar, Cherokee, Clarke, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Harrison, Humboldt, Jasper, Lyon, Mills, Montgomery, O’Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Polk, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Shelby, Sioux, Story, Union, and Woodbury counties.

Items that were destroyed in recent disasters like tornadoes, storms, and flooding may be eligible to be replaced by FEMA, including tools not provided by an employer, but that are required for work. Items that qualify for replacement include computers, power tools, art materials, musical instruments, tractors, utility vehicles, lawnmowers, ladders, and uniforms.

FEMA can reimburse these items if they were damaged by the disaster, you do not have a working replacement, and they were not covered by insurance.

In order to qualify, you will need the following documentation:

  • Documents that proves you’re self-employed, such as a tax return.
  • Insurance documents for all potential coverages and benefits.
  • Itemized receipts or estimates for repairing or replacing the requested items.
  • A written statement that explains why you need the items for self-employment.

To apply for FEMA, you can visit their website, download their app, or call 800-621-3362.
