SLATER, Iowa — The driver of a truck that crashed into a Casey’s in Slater Tuesday night is now facing charges.

At around 8:15 p.m. the Story County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle that crashed into the front of the Casey’s building in Slater. When deputies arrived on scene they found the front of the building and the truck significantly damaged. No injuries were reported.

According to a criminal complaint, the driver of the truck, David Wayne Hanks, told deputies that he went to Casey’s to get something to drink and that when he pulled up to the gas station “his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas, causing him to crash.”

Deputies on scene noted that Hanks’ eyes were bloodshot and watery, his speech was slurred, and that he smelled strongly of alcohol, the criminal complaint states. A preliminary breath test showed a result over the legal limit of .08, the complaint states.

Hanks has been charged with operating while intoxicated – second offense, failure to maintain control, and no valid drivers license. He was booked into the Story County Jail on Tuesday, but has since been released.
