Which Iowans are swimming for a shot at Olympic glory in Paris

DES MOINES, Iowa — With its strong history of dominance in Olympic competition, Team USA Swimming is regarded as the hardest squad to make in the world.

Nearly a dozen swimmers with strong Iowa ties were good enough to qualify for the 2024 Olympic trials in Indianapolis.

WOMEN

Aurora Roghair is arguably the state’s best chance to make Team USA for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Roghair just finished up her junior year at the University of Stanford. The Iowa City West alum qualified for four total events with the Women’s 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 1500m freestyle, and the 800m freestyle. Roghair finished just short of making Team USA in the 400m with a 5th-place finish. She did not qualify for the finals in the 200m freestyle. Roghair will compete in the 1500m freestyle on Tuesday, June 18th. The women’s 800m freestyle is Friday. Roghair is representing the Alto Swim Club.

Grace Frericks is a Cedar Falls High School alum who just wrapped up her sophomore year at Kentucky. Frericks qualified in the 200m backstroke which will take place Thursday, June 20th. Frericks is representing Kentucky Aquatic.

Meghan Donald is an Ames HS alum and just wrapped up her sophomore year at North Carolina State University. The Ames native qualified in the 100m backstroke and did not qualify for the finals. Donald is representing Wolfpack Elite.

MEN

Jacob Pins swam for Valley High School in West Des Moines and has plans to attend Arizona State in the Fall of 2024. Pins qualified in both the 800m and 400m freestyle. Pins is representing the Iowa Flyers Swim Club. He did not make it out of the preliminary rounds.

Kohen Rankin just wrapped up his sophomore year at Army West Point. The Hull native qualified in the 100m breaststroke but did not make the finals.

Joe Polyak recently graduated from Iowa City High and plans to attend the University of Minnesota in the fall. Polyak qualified in the 100m breaststroke but did not make the finals. Polyak has two races remaining. On Tuesday, June 18th Polyak competes in the 200m breaststroke. On Thursday, June 20th Polyak will compete in the 200m IM. Polyak is representing the Iowa Flyers Swim Club.

Joshua Chen attended Ames High School in his early years and has since moved to Texas. Chen plans to attend Harvard in the fall. Chen qualified in the 100m breaststroke where he did not make the finals. He still has the 200m breaststroke on Tuesday, June 18th.

Hayden Hakes is an Iowa City West student who will graduate high school in 2025. Hakes qualified in the 200m backstroke which will take place on Tuesday, June 18th. Hakes represents Iowa Flyers Swim Club and he is still undecided on his college choice.

Drew Reiter is a Waukee High School alum and just finished his sophomore year at Indiana. Reiter qualified for the 400m IM but did not make the finals. He also qualified in the 200m butterfly where he did not make the finals. He has another opportunity in the 200m IM on Thursday, June 20th.

Diggory Dillingham competed as a freshman at Iowa City West before eventually ending up in high school in Oregon. Dillingham qualified in the 50m freestyle on Thursday. He recently graduated from high school and is expected to attend the University of Southern California in the fall. Dillingham is representing Team Eugene Aqua.

Owen Chiles is a native of Pleasant Valley and recently graduated from PV High School. Chiles plans to attend the University of Cincinnati in the fall.  Chiles qualified in the 200m IM on Thursday, June 20th. Chiles is representing Iowa Flyers Swim Club.
