Baby found safe after SUV stolen in Des Moines
DES MOINES, Iowa — A nine-month-old baby that was in the back seat of an SUV when it was stolen Friday morning has been found and is safe.
The black Mercedes-Benz SUV was stolen from the 2300 block of Ingersoll Avenue shortly before 11:00 a.m. Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said a little after 11:30 a.m. police found the vehicle in the parking lot of the Office Max at 2700 Ingersoll Avenue.
“It’s one of those calls that makes your heart sink to your stomach that a car with a child inside of it’s been stolen. So, this was all hands on deck effort, we had the State Patrol ready to put the airplane in the air, we were working on an Amber Alert. What got this case solved was just the boots on the ground. We put everybody in that building out on the street looking for this car. And fortunately, a detective located it here just a few blocks from where it was stolen. The child’s fine. And right now we’re in the process of canvassing the area for cameras and any other evidence that can point us in the direction of the suspect,” said Sgt. Parizek.
He said there was no indication that this was an attempt to steal the child but just a crime of opportunity for someone looking to steal the SUV.
No one other than the baby was inside the vehicle when it was located.
