Railroad bridge hit after semi-driver hauling vehicles misjudges the height
DES MOINES, Iowa — A semi-truck hauling vehicles had some clearance issues Tuesday morning on Des Moines’ east side.
It happened around 8:50 a.m. on E. University Avenue, just east of I-235. The semi was traveling westbound when it went under a railroad bridge, shearing off the top of a Jeep it was transporting. Sgt. Paul Parizek with the Des Moines Police Department said the driver of the semi didn’t stop, and they’ve not been able to locate the semi.
Des Moines Public Works cleared the debris from the roadway. Railroad employees came out to determine whether any damage had been done to the bridge and didn’t find any, Sgt. Parizek said.
The clearance of the bridge is posted as 13 feet and 6 inches.
