Bicyclists Beware: Brain Dead PBOT
I won’t say all new bike lane infrastructure is terrible. The Naito Pkwy removal of one traffic lane for the bikeway is working fine though not my first choice. The new sidewalk and crosswalks there were long overdue. The NW Flanders Street and NE 7th Ave ped/bikeway bridges over I-405 and I-84 are respectable. That said, there are quite a few “traffic calming” devices and street closures that make traffic hazards worse. The worst notions of PBOT bike lanes are on the so-called “Green Loop” specifically the segment from NE 7th Ave to the river along the Broadway/Weidler corridor has way too much insane traffic and should be rejected now, not later. An early design from NE 7th was along Clackamas Street a (block south of Weidler) to a ped/bikeway bridge over I-5 directly to the Vancouver/Williams Ave bike lanes. Here ODOT may be pulling PBOT strings to exhibit their typical disregard for public safety. Widening I-5 through the Rose Quarter as proposed should be rejected as likely to make traffic hazards worse, not better. The Green Loop through the Park blocks is likewise terrible. Here, PBOT proposes laying a wide concrete sidewalk/bike lane in the park next to the curb, taking out many trees. My first thought was eliminate parking and locate Green Loop lanes in the street to enhance the park experience. The bike route proposed to traverse the federal post office redevelopment site is as idiotic as the 40-story skyscrapers and 25-story towers south of Johnson. We should’ve recalled Wheeler when we had the chance and take his idiot sycophants at PBOT with him.
