Orange County moves to expand mental health care
The Orange County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 15 approved a plan to expand mental health services by developing county-owned property near the Great Park in Irvine.
The 22-acre parcel on Marine Way slated to become the second campus in the Be Well OC program was once part of the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. It is adjacent to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County warehouse.
The board on Tuesday approved a development agreement — as a prelude to signing a long-term lease — with Mind OC, the nonprofit that will operate three planned Be Well OC hubs.
Similar to a site under construction at the 57 Freeway in Orange, the second Be Well campus is a public-private partnership involving county health agencies, hospital systems, and local nonprofit, academic and faith-based groups.
All three Be Well OC sites are expected to offer a variety of services — including psychiatric crisis-stabilization units, short and long-term mental health treatment, and help with substance abuse disorders — regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. The first hub, at 265 S. Anita Drive in Orange, is set to open in January.
