Laguna Beach Unified School District applies for elementary school waiver

Laguna Beach Unified School District has joined the waiver pursuit.

Orange County’s second smallest district has applied for the state’s elementary school waiver for in-person instruction in hopes of having another option if coronavirus cases in the county begin to trend upward again.

Laguna Beach’s application comes as many schools across the county are eyeing a potential start of in-person instruction as soon as Sept. 22, if health conditions continue to move in a positive direction.

The countdown toward Sept. 22 was triggered by the county’s move on Sept. 8 to the red tier in the state’s new coronavirus monitoring system.

Laguna Beach Unified said if the county’s numbers “don’t hold,” its district board wants the waiver to create more options.

The district’s waiver application was received by the county health care agency on Sept. 8 and is pending approval.

Laguna Beach Unified, home to about 2,800 students last year, hasn’t announced a reopening date for in-person instruction, but is expected to discuss the subject at its Sept. 17 board meeting. The district has been operating in distancing learning mode.

The elementary waiver allows schools to open to in-person instruction if they submit detailed plans that cover social distancing, cleaning and health screenings among other items.

Laguna Beach features two elementary schools for kindergarten through fifth grade: El Morro and Top of the World.

Los Alamitos is the only public school district in the county that has used the waiver. The district reopened its elementary schools for in-person instruction on Sept. 8. More than 100 private schools have also been approved for the waiver.
