Uber driver suspected of sexually assaulting passenger in Santa Ana

An Uber driver suspected of holding a woman against her will and then sexually assaulting her in Santa Ana remained behind bars following his arrest Wednesday, Sept. 9.

Jason Humberto Rodas, 30 of Garden Grove, was assigned at about 4 a.m. to pick up a 51-year-old woman and drive her to her workplace, Santa Ana police said in a news release. He told the victim midway through the trip that he would not charge her for the ride, then began to ask her questions about her sex life.

The suspect drove erratically and refused to let the passenger leave, police said. He allegedly threatened to throw her out if she called for help.

The victim exited the vehicle and tried to escape near the 300 block of South Minnie Street, but Rodas caught up to her, police said. He allegedly strangled, then sexually assaulted her.

Evidence found at the scene of the crime helped detectives identify Rodas as a suspect, police said. He was arrested and booked on suspicion of crimes including kidnapping with intent to commit rape. He remained in custody at the Santa Ana Jail, with bail set at $1,000,000.

Police suspect Rodas may have  committed other crimes. Authorities asked anyone with information that might be relevant to investigators to contact Santa Ana Police Detective Julio Gallardo at 714-245-9378 or gallardo@santa-ana.org. Tips can also be left anonymously with Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS (855-847-6227).
