Watch Gov. Brown’s 11 am Press Conference on Portland Protests and COVID-19

by Alex Zielinski

Gov. Kate Brown will hold a press conference at 11 am Friday to address the growing number of crises across Oregon: The COVID-19 pandemic, protests against police brutality that have turned fatal, and the threat of wildfires.

Brown announced the press conference prior to the Thursday killing of Michael Reinoehl by law enforcement in Washington state. Reinoehl was suspected of fatally shooting Aaron “Jay” Danielson at a pro-Trump rally in downtown Portland last Saturday. Federal and local law enforcement shot Reinoehl Thursday evening after tracking him down at an apartment complex outside of Lacey, WA.

Brown is expected to address these recent deaths—and the escalating violence surrounding Black Lives Matter protests in downtown Portland. This weekend marks the 100th day of consecutive protests against police brutality in Portland, spurred by the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in late May. Several events are planned to take place across the city to commemorate the milestone. Trump supporters are also planning to hold another caravan-style rally on Monday, September 7, in the Portland area.

Members of Oregon Health Authority will join Brown at this morning’s press conference to provide an update on COVID-19 data and precautions before Labor Day weekend. Brown is also expected to address the threat of wildfires sparked by human activity.
