Santa Ana family stricken with coronavirus embraced by community support

A steady stream of drivers arrived at a pop-up car wash Sunday in Santa Ana to support a family devastated by coronavirus that needs to raise money for a funeral.

Many didn’t even want their cars washed. They just wanted to drop off a donation.

“A lot of people stopped by and donated and expressed their condolences. I’m very thankful,” said Carolina Gonzalez, whose father, Juan Ramos Moreno, died on Monday after falling ill with coronavirus in late June.

Ramos, 51, lived with his wife, four of his children, and a daughter-in-law in a 600-square-foot home, where it was difficult to separate and maintain social distance as one after the other started to get sick. In all, six of the seven family members living in the two-bedroom home became sick, with various degrees of symptoms, from mild to critical.

Even though he was seriously ill, Ramos’ family was hopeful he would make it.  So when he died, his death took not only an emotional toll, but also created a financial hardship for the working-class family.

Many Orange County residents responded to their plight by donating to a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Ramos’ funeral. And lots of people stopped by the car wash, where the family also sold hot dogs and snacks to raise money.

Ramos had seven children and six grandchildren, with another grandchild on the way. His three younger children attend schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District.

The tight-knit family plans to see Ramos one last time next week. After that, his ashes will be interned at the same cemetery where his parents are buried.
