Semi veers off I-80 and crashes into creek, driver seriously injured
POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa — A semi driver was seriously injured Thursday morning after his rig veered off I-80 and crashed into a creek in western Iowa.
It happened just before 8:00 a.m. east of the Minden exit, according to Sgt. Alex Dinkla of the Iowa State Patrol. A semi traveling westbound went off the interstate, in between the two bridges over Keg Creek, and then down into the creek, crashing and causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
The semi driver was trapped in the vehicle until rescue crews were able to extricate him. He was transported from the scene by air ambulance to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for treatment of serious injuries.
The eastbound lanes of traffic were closed while emergency crews worked and a detour was put in place, but eastbound traffic has since resumed.
The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate what caused the crash.
