Still waiting for results in 1st congressional district race

OSKALOOSA, Iowa — The 1st Congressional District Race remains close between Marianette Miller-Meeks and Christina Bohannan. Just 800 votes separate the two candidates. Miller-Meeks has claimed victory despite the AP not calling the race and Bohannan has not conceded.

The First District had the same scenario just four years ago, when Miller-Meeks was leading Democratic candidate Rita Hart by 7 votes. Hart used a rule through the U.S. house to have the votes recounted in the entire First District. Miller-Meeks prevailed.

Now, residents of the first district are seeing the possibility of a recount again. Eva Ford, a Democrat from Mt. Pleasant thought it was odd that Miller-Meeks claimed a win before the race had been called.

“Because there is a bigger margin than even the last time that Miller-Meeks ran, it was like, oh I didn’t like it, but I thought well maybe she’s right,” said Ford. “As it comes down to it, you know such a small difference last time but this time it was a bigger one.”

“What I understand from roughly 800 votes spread, that’s enough,” said David Dixon, of Oskaloosa. “I would assume that a recount would not recoup that many.”

“I’m surprised actually that it’s kind of in limbo,” said Richard Countryman, of Oskaloosa. “I don’t know if it’s really solid for a candidate to come out and claim victory when it hasn’t been called by the Associated Press.”
