South Hamilton School District takes disciplinary action for alleged safety threat
JEWELL, Iowa – More officers were at South Hamilton High School Thursday after a social media threat caused schools in the district to go on lockdown Wednesday.
Snapchat’s algorithm flagged a threatening post made by a student, which was sent to the FBI. Several law enforcement officials responded to the high school in Jewell. The threat was determined not to be credible.
In a letter sent to parents, and posted to the district’s social media accounts Thursday, Superintendent Heather Holm said law enforcement’s investigation into the incident continues but a student has been disciplined by the school. Further discipline could be taken based on the results of the law enforcement investigation.
You can read the text of the letter below:
Dear South Hamilton Families,
We are writing to follow up on the lockdown situation that occurred yesterday.
The investigation is ongoing at this time. Any potential legal action remains under law enforcement’s jurisdiction and will be based on their findings. The safety threat made by the student was determined not to be ongoing.
School disciplinary action has been taken while the investigation continues, and the district will determine any further disciplinary action once the investigation is complete.
To support our students today, counselors are available on-site, and we have an increased law enforcement presence to ensure that students and staff feel safe and supported. As always, safety remains our top priority in the South Hamilton Community School District.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we address this situation. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Heather Holm
Superintendent
