Can you wear political clothing to the polls in Iowa?
DES MOINES, Iowa — In Iowa, it is okay to wear clothing with candidates’ names on it when you go to the polls, however, once you have voted you need to leave the polling place or you could be at risk of electioneering.
Electioneering is illegal in Iowa and is considered to be anything swaying voters’ minds at the polls. For this reason, no political signs or posters can be displayed within 300 feet of a polling center.
Talking to people in line to vote about candidates is also not allowed under electioneering laws.
Jamie Fitzgerald, the Polk County Auditor, said the county doesn’t expect electioneering to be an issue at the polls this year.
“Electioneering has been illegal for decades. That’s going in front of the polling sites saying ‘vote for this person, vote for that person,’ leaving a car with a bunch of signs in front of the polling site. You have to be 300 feet away and we’re going to enforce that. That’s been enforced for every election. We don’t see that being an issue. Sure, there might be one overzealous campaign person will chase those folks out. We’ve got to make sure that everything is fair and secure,” Fitzgerald said.
