WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The FBI is ramping up security efforts ahead of Election Day. On Monday, the agency said it is operating a 24/7 national election command post that will run at least through Nov. 9.

“The purpose of the command post is to ensure the FBI is well-positioned to respond to threats that would come in, or information that would come in that would affect our election security,” James Barnacle, the deputy assistant director of the criminal investigative division at the FBI said.

Barnacle said those threats include threats to election workers, foreign influence and cyber threats. It’s not the first election the FBI has operated a national command post, but Barnacle said this year’s command center is a little more “robust” than it has been in the past.  

“More partner agencies are here, and we started the command post sooner,” Barnacle said.

The national command post located at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. will work with FBI field offices across the country to share information about potential threats to election security. So far, Barnacle said the agency has seen foreign malign influence operations as well as attempted cyberattacks.

“We see cyber instances all the time where adversaries are trying to hit the secretaries of state or state governments or local governments and cause issues with their infrastructure,” Barnacle said.

The FBI is asking people to report any threats of violence or criminal activity to state and local election officials, as well as law enforcement.
