Domestic violence suspect causes crash, now in custody

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man is in custody after causing a crash with injury while fleeing from an alleged domestic assault.

According to police around 2:44 p.m. the Des Moines Police Department responded to the 2700 block of East Grand Avenue on reports of a domestic fight.

When officers arrived witnesses pointed them in the direct of a vehicle that was leaving the scene being driven by a male suspect. The man has since been identified as 31-year-old Alonzo Cortez Hickman.

Officers pursued the suspect but briefly lost sight of the vehicle. It was then spotted driving westbound near the 2700 block of Lyon Street. The vehicle approached the intersection of East 26th Street and Lyon Street and ran through the stop sign. Then crashing into another vehicle that was southbound and driven by an adult female.

Hickman was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the hospital for medical care. The woman received first aid on the scene and was transferred to the hospital in serious condition.

Hickman was treated and then released from the hospital. He has been arrested and charged with reckless driving, domestic abuse assault, failure to obey a traffic control device, and no insurance.

The Des Moines Police Department Traffic Unit has opened a technical investigation into the crash.
