Des Moines man charged with Attempted Murder for allegedly shooting man in chest
DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been arrested in connection to a shooting earlier this month that sent one person to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
On September 6 at around 8:18 p.m. the Des Moines Police and Fire Department responded to a report of a shooting with a victim at an apartment in the 3700 block of 57th Street. According to court documents, an adult male was shot in the chest and was transported to a nearby hospital.
According to a criminal complaint, 44-year-old Aaron Jaye Pickens, along with two women, were inside the victim’s apartment when the shooting occurred. The victim told police that Pickens was the person who shot him, the complaint states.
Shortly after the shooting occurred officers located Pickens just blocks away from the crime scene and identified him as the suspect, court documents state. Video evidence collected in the investigation showed Pickens leaving the apartment and making statements about how he shot someone, according to a criminal complaint.
Officers also located a stolen 9mm Glock 48 in a dumpster outside of the apartment building, court documents state.
Pickens was booked into the Polk County Jail Wednesday night and remains behind bars on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Pickens has been charged with Attempted Murder and Dominion/Control of Firearm/Offensive Weapon by felon. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for October 7.
