New location for Homeless Veterans Stand Down in Des Moines this weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa — An annual event to help veterans and the homeless is coming back this weekend, but this year it’s in a new spot.
The “Homeless Veterans Stand Down” will now be held at 1220 Shaw Street.
The state informed the group it couldn’t hold an event on state property for longer than one day due to a new policy enacted in July. Organizers of this three-day event had to scramble to find a new spot.
“We’ve got way too much invested in our community and our veterans and the people that are not veterans that are struggling,” Nick Lemmo, a board member with Homeless Veterans Stand Down, said. “So that’s why we do it, and that’s why we fought tooth and nail to find a spot to hold it.”
Thankfully, the city of Des Moines is letting the group use the empty lot across from the Des Moines Police Traffic building.
The event will still offer free food, clothing, haircuts, medical and dentistry attention, and even employment opportunities.
Volunteers will start setting up on Thursday. The event begins Friday, Sept. 13 at 5:00 p.m. and goes to 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, the hours are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Sunday, the hours are 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
