Fines increased over 801 Day at Iowa State
AMES, Iowa – The Ames City Council has increased fines for Nuisance parties in the C Campustown area over the weekend before the fall semester. Fines are $650 first-time offense, and $855 for repeat offenses.
The day is called 801 Day after an old Iowa State tradition naming the day that, for alcohol was prohibited in fraternity and sorority houses prior to 8:01 am on the Saturday before fall classes.
“It is not a thing you know, there was a period in time where that was a thing but that’s been long gone,” said Michael Newton, the Iowa State University Police Chief. “You know it’s kind of just become this day this tradition and what we’re trying to do is I’m trying to put structure around it, trying to explain to people how to celebrate the new school year responsibly.”
Already some students were cleaning up and putting the grill out for the weekend.
“Normally, we wake up around 6:30 eat some breakfast get a nice outfit going shower up, the crack beer open around 801,” said Jake Willkomm, a student from Durant.
“We don’t mean we don’t wanna get in trouble with the law we want to just have a good time and be fine. Stay hydrated keep food and your stomach,” said Alec De Phillips, a student from Des Moines.
“I really want to encourage people to do the responsible thing this weekend,” said Newton. Have a great time we want people to have a great time. I really encourage students to come to our campus events and then those who wanna come from out of town don’t come here.”
