Adventureland honors the “Tornado” in weekend celebrations

ALTOONA, Iowa — Adventureland is celebrating 50 years this weekend with a 5k roller-coaster ride, drone show, and coaster celebration.

Today was a special day for one of Adventurelands tallest, fastest, and longest wooden roller coasters. The “Tornado” has been recognized as a roller coaster landmark by the American Coaster Enthusiasts.

At noon a plaque was unveiled recognizing the Tornado as a landmark to not only Adventureland, but also to Iowa.

This is yet another award as the coaster was considered one of the top ten wooden roller coasters in the U.S. when it was built in 1978.

And the fun doesn’t stop there, not only has the park extended their hours but they are also hosting a drone show August 16-18 starting at 9:10 p.m.

This weekend’s event is the largest 3D drone show to ever take flight in the state. The drones will form iconic park images, even featuring a unique design that the public was able to vote on.

“The drone show is unlike anything we’ve ever done before. It showcases the park’s forward-thinking spirit and is the perfect way to kick off our lineup of fall events,” Adventureland General Manager Mike Lusky said.

And the fun isn’t over yet! They have added three additional days to their season, August 19-21.
