Presidential debate stage set for September
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Former President Donald Trump is recommitting to a Sept. 10 debate on ABC. Trump recently backed out of the scheduled televised event after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump made the announcement during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate Thursday. He says he’s open to participating in three debates in September: ABC on Sept. 10, Fox on Sept. 4 and NBC on Sept. 25.
Harris told reporters Thursday she was “glad” to hear Trump agreed to the Sept. 10 debate. A spokesperson with the Harris campaign says the VP is open to more debates, and conversations are underway.
Todd Belt, a political analyst at George Washington University, says debates will offer each candidate an opportunity to make inroads with undecided voters.
Polling suggests, like 2020, the 2024 election will be decided by a small slice of undecided voters in swing states.
“Both sides have so much to gain,” Belt said.
President Biden and Trump agreed to not have a live studio audience and their mics were muted to avoid interruptions for their June 27 debate on CNN.
ABC has not laid out the terms and conditions for the Sept. 10 debate.
