Ottumwa man accused of fatally stabbing victim at park

OTTUMWA, Iowa — An Ottumwa man is behind bars after allegedly fatally stabbing a 40-year-old man at a park early Tuesday morning.

At around 1:02 a.m. the Ottumwa Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at Foster Park. When first responders arrived on scene they found 40-year-old Jeffery Wayne Johns suffering from a stab wound in his torso. Johns was transported to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries.

Officers executed a search warrant at around 9:12 a.m. at a home in the 2200 block of East Main Street. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Joshua Michael, was found hiding in the attic of the home.

Michael was taken into custody and has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to Johns’ death.
