Iowa Speedway holds Indy Car Fan Friday
NEWTON, Iowa –The Hy-Vee IndyCar Weekend started off with Fan Friday, where fans could get in free.
“It’s the opening day IndyCar race weekend 2024, certainly a lot of interest and attention is being put on what we see on track here today,” said Merrill Cain, of Hy-Vee IndyCar Weekend Public Relations. “There’s a new re-pavement and a partial re-pavement of the circuit and it really makes a big difference.”
Also this year a new engine in the cars, which will add to the horsepower total.
“It allows it to be much like a hybrid in a car, it creates that extra energy,” said Cain “It’s still something new and different that the teams need to get used to, get comfortable with, this weekend.”
Crews are working in the practice laps to adjust the down force, and see which tires would work best on the Iowa Speedway Oval.
Friday was also a day for fans.
“I love everything about the IndyCar. I like the short oval, I like the speed here fans are great love it all been coming here for a lot of years,” said Dave Carper, of Lincoln NE. “My first Indy 500 was 1983, I’ve been a fan ever since.”
“We come for autographs, we really like the series, ” said Caleb Hicks, of Kokomo Indiana. “I think the series is probably the best it’s been in a really long time, but overall we’re just fans.”
