POLK CITY, IOWA — The rain that created the floods the state has been dealing with over the last couple of weeks is now a problem for those wanting to enjoy a lake over the Fourth of July.

Officials at Saylorville Lake warned boaters of getting out this week due to the debris in the water. Lake Red Rock had to shut down two beaches Wednesday due to rising waters, but Big Creek Lake at Big Creek State Park is fully open for the holiday.

“Everybody thinks that we’re shut down here. No, we are not. We’re totally normal. Beach is normal. The water level is normal. The quality of the water is normal,” said Mark Crawford, the owner and operator of the Big Creek Marina.

Crawford said that the lake is lucky to not have those flood waters feed into it and he is grateful as the Fourth of July is the biggest day for the marina.

Pontoon boats, kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, sailboats, paddle boats and more are available to rent from the marina. Crawford mentioned that the rain has been an issue not because of flooding, but for keeping people away. He is expecting a big crowd on the beach tomorrow.

Families were starting the holiday weekend early on July 3. One grandpa is in town all way from Delaware to spend time with his grandson over the holiday.

“Well, we came out for the 4th of July because I’ve always every summer we’ve since my grandson’s been born,” said Tom Dean, from Newark, DE. “That was great going down first thing in the morning, we saw all these little hobbies, hobbies here, and I was like, okay, I’m going to give it a shot. Never been on a hobby. I have a sailboat, but I’ve never been on something this small.”
