Suspect identified in Des Moines chase, standoff
DES MOINES, Iowa — Officials have released the name of a man who was arrested Monday following a chase and an hours-long standoff in Des Moines.
Cody Radke, 38, is being held in the Polk County Jail on multiple charges including eluding, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, along with drug and traffic violations.
Criminal complaints filed in the case show an Iowa State Trooper attempted a traffic stop on Radke in the area of East 42nd St. and Hubbell Ave. around 11:18 a.m. on outstanding arrest warrants. Radke refused to stop and at times during the pursuit was driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic.
The complaint said Radke drove to his residence in the 2900 block of E. 40th, where he barricaded himself inside.
Sgt. Alex Dinkla with the Iowa State Patrol said people inside the home quickly left on Radke’s arrival. Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Des Moines Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene and set up a perimeter.
Negotiators worked for hours to get Radke to surrender, but when communication broke down, Sgt. Dinkla said they escalated tactics to encourage Radke to come out by using tear gas and loud canister bangs.
“That’s one of the things our negotiators with all of these agencies they work together, they train together. And this is a classic example of why they train together. Because here in the city of Des Moines we worked with the city of Des Moines, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Patrol collectively worked together to make sure that this was a peaceful resolution,” said Sgt. Dinkla.
The standoff ended just after 3:00 p.m. when Radke exited the home and was taken into custody.
