18-year-old charged in Merle Hay neighborhood stabbing
DES MOINES, Iowa — An 18-year-old male has been charged in connection to a stabbing that occurred early Thursday morning in the Merle Hay neighborhood.
At around 4:39 a.m. the Des Moines Police Department and Des Moines Fire Department responded to a report of a large fight involving juveniles in the 2200 block of Merle Hay Road. While first responders were heading to the scene more 911 calls came in reporting a possible assault and gunfire near the area, Des Moines Police said.
When first responders arrived on scene they found several juveniles involved in a dispute. First responders also found a 17-year-old male suffering from a stab wound in the 2100 block of 60th Street. According to police, the victim was stabbed near the apartments at 2212 Merle Hay Road.
The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment of a minor stab wound. He is expected to recover, police said.
An 18-year-old has now been charged in connection to the stabbing. Demar Kantrell Jones has been charged with assault causing serious injury and harassment of a public official. He is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
No evidence of gunfire was found. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
