Are central Iowans planning to vote in June primaries?

DES MOINES, Iowa — The last two primary elections in Iowa have brought out the two largest voter turnouts for a primary day.

We will see if the trend continues when the polls open up at 7 a.m. statewide tomorrow. Ahead of election day, WHO 13 News asked some Iowa voters if they plan on voting and why.

“Every election,” said a voter from Des Moines walking around Gray’s Lake on Monday afternoon. “I kind of like democracy, I like it a lot … it’s a shame more people don’t vote … it’s all critical. I just don’t think you can separate it out. You need to vote at every level.”

The majority of Iowans who stopped to talk with WHO 13 News on Monday said that they were not aware of the election about to happen, were not going to vote, or both.

“No I am not,” said Melinda Bianchi. “I mean it’s important but, you know, I just don’t want to vote if I’m not well-informed.” Bianchi added that she is absolutely planning on voting in November, as that is when she usually does.

“I’m not participating,” said Brian Marks, from Des Moines. “Just when that (general election) comes at the end of the year, I mean, that’s when I usually really dig deep and really take charge for what I want and what I want to do as well for America.”

The majority of those who said they plan to participate in the primary have already voted early in-person or by absentee ballot.

Polls open statewide Tuesday morning at 7 a.m. You can find your polling place on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.
