Des Moines man charged in connection to theft of car with baby inside

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has now been charged in connection to a theft of a SUV while a baby was still inside on Friday morning.

At around 10:52 a.m. the Des Moines Police Department responded to the 2300 block of Ingersoll Avenue for a report of a vehicle that was stolen while a 9-month-old baby was still in the backseat.

According to police, the Des Moines Police Department Communications Center was able to track a cellphone that was left inside the SUV in order to locate it. That information led officers to an area north of I-235 and an area south of Grand Avenue.

At around 11:50 a.m. a detective found the stolen SUV with the baby still inside abandoned in a parking lot in the 2700 block of Ingersoll Avenue. The child was safe and unharmed.

Leads from witnesses and video evidence led police to the suspected car thief at an apartment complex near the area where the SUV was abandoned.

Officers arrested Corey Van Le, 32, in connection to the incident. Le has been booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of neglect of a dependent person and operating a motor vehicle without the owners consent.
