Farewell Mrs. Finn: Longtime Perry teacher honored with Golden Apple
PERRY, Iowa — After dedicating more than three decades to students, Kris Finn is ending the school year and teaching her career on a high note.
For the past 34 years, the special education teacher at Perry High School has helped her students learn and grow.
“Maybe be a voice for them if I have to,” Finn said, “you know just encourage them to be a better person and know that they can become somebody.”
It’s encouragement that extends beyond her classroom.
“She’s just a wonderful person. She’s the glue here at the school,” Principal Brad Snowgren said. “She is always a smiling face and is always in the hall interacting with students, and just that glowing smile in our hallway.”
“Even if she doesn’t necessarily know the student that well she’s always asking, ‘hi, how are you?’ ‘I like your shirt.’ ‘How’d your sporting event last night?’ Or congratulating them on a certain win,” senior Zoey Vail reflects.
This past year, Zoey and her friend Grace interned with Mrs. Finn, where they got to not only see but feel how much she cares for students.
“She’s constantly there to support me with anything I do,” senior Grace Carman said. “She’s helped me with schoolwork. She’s helped me figure out what I want to do after I leave high school, like she’s been someone I can constantly look up to.”
It’s why they both nominated Mrs. Finn for the Golden Apple.
“Although her teaching career is coming to a close, her legacy will live on in every heart she has touched,” Kelly Field, the presenter with IMT Insurance, said.
It’s an honor that’s been 34 years in the making.
“I definitely will miss what PHS has given to me. All the kindness, the great students we’ve had, and all my great coworkers as well. I appreciate this,” Finn said as she accepted the award. “Thank you so much for this. I will miss Perry High School so much.”
Current and former students gave Mrs. Finn her flowers. A testament to all she’s accomplished.
“Just that I touched a lot of people’s lives,” Finn said, “and I did make a difference on a lot of students, just not in this classroom but outside as well.”
