Rainfall So Far in 2024, and More Storm Chances Ahead

We began the year headed into year 4 of drought in many parts of Iowa, with the eastern part of the state being in the worst shape. We’ve since had much-needed rain fall over many parts of Iowa. So how are we doing for the spring and the year so far?

Last night into this morning saw more precipitation fall on the state, with amounts shown above and below in images from WHO13 weather and courtesy of the Iowa Environmental Mesonet.

Rainfall over the past week, shown above, has been impressive over parts of Iowa. However, as shown below, you don’t want to make up for a rainfall deficit too quickly, as storms moving over the same spots over short periods of time can lead to river flooding like we’re seeing in the northern part of the state along upper reaches of the Des Moines River.

Below, rain over the past month in Iowa, and departures from average. The Des Moines metro area and, unfortunately, parts of eastern Iowa where the drought has been the most severe have seen a below-average trend.

Rain Over the Past 3 Months

Yearly rainfall totals are shown below, and monthly averages follow for Des Moines. The metro is running almost an inch below average for the year so far.

Our next round of storms looks to come Monday evening, and some could be strong and produce heavy rain once again.

Rain chances will also be with us Wednesday and Thursday. Below, the European model’s estimate of rainfall from Monday through Thursday this upcoming work week.
