The Drake Relays: Past Weather and This Week’s Forecast

The week of the Drake Relays approaches, and with it the inevitable talk of weather. As it turns out, rain is pretty common at one point or another during a typical Relays week, which stretches from Wednesday through Saturday (although there are a few events prior). As you can see below, most years see at least some rainfall. And, it being April, temperatures can be cool, though the spring of 2012 was certainly a warm outlier.

We’ll see a slight chance for a light shower Monday evening into Tuesday morning this week, then sunny skies from Tuesday afternoon into Thursday morning. After that, things change.

Our pattern becomes warm and wet into the weekend, with rounds of storms beginning Thursday afternoon and possibly lasting into the beginning of the following week.

As I type this Saturday evening, the best chance for severe weather looks to come Friday afternoon and evening. In this type of pattern, there will be breaks between rounds of storms, during which Drake Relays events and outdoor activities can happen. But within the windows of precipitation, heavy rainfall and lightning will of course be possible.

Below, a look at the European model’s predicted rainfall through next Saturday afternoon.

The good news is that temperatures will be warmer next week, making any outdoor activities more enjoyable. Highs, your temperature trend, and your WHO13 7-day forecast are below. We’ll continue to keep you informed this week!
