How the Caitlin Clark Effect is impacting Dowling Catholic students

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — There’s no denying Iowa Hawkeye hoops star Caitlin Clark is already a household name in college sports. There’s even a name for her impact on ticket sales and interest in women’s basketball: the Caitlin Clark Effect.

Kristin Meyer, Clark’s high school basketball coach, said the Caitlin Clark Effect hit Dowling Catholic a little earlier.

“We’re definitely seeing the Caitlin Clark Effect across the United States and I think here at Dowling Catholic we’re seeing it a little bit more, and to be honest I think we’re seeing it a little bit earlier than some places. Because a lot of our current high school athletes got to watch Caitlin when she was in high school, so we’ve got bigger numbers out than we’ve had in a few years and there is a lot of interest at the middle school and elementary level. You see a lot of Caitlin Clark shirts and Iowa shirts which is really fun to see. She’s definitely just growing the game here at Dowling in Iowa and across the country,” Meyer said.

There’s no doubt Clark will go on to inspire countless more athletes as she transitions to the WNBA following this season. She’s projected to be the #1 pick in the April 15th WNBA draft.

All eyes will be on Clark and the Hawkeyes when they face off Friday night against UConn in the Final Four in Cleveland. Tip-off is 8:30 p.m. and the game is on ESPN.
